Individual Therapy for Adults

Evidence-based therapy for adults navigating intense emotions, trauma, and relational challenges

For adults and young adults who feel stuck in patterns they want to change, but don’t yet know how.

Many adults I work with have lived with intense emotions for much of their lives. They may struggle with chronic shame, unstable relationships, self-harm, eating concerns, trauma, or repeated crises. Often they've already tried therapy, sometimes for years, without experiencing the change they were hoping for.

Adult therapy begins by making sense of how these patterns developed and identifying safer, more effective ways to respond when emotions run high. The goal is not to eliminate emotion, but to increase stability, choice, and self-respect over time.

My Approach to Adult Therapy

My work with adults is grounded primarily in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), alongside trauma-informed and relational approaches. DBT principles and skills inform much of the work we do together, even when a full comprehensive DBT program is not indicated.

Therapy is collaborative, structured, and active. We pay attention to patterns, practice new responses, and move at a pace that balances emotional safety with meaningful change. When appropriate, trauma-focused work using DBT-Prolonged Exposure (DBT-PE) is integrated carefully and collaboratively.

Concerns I Commonly Support Adults With

Adult therapy may be helpful if you are navigating:

  • Intense or rapidly shifting emotions

  • Chronic shame or self-criticism

  • Relationship instability or recurring conflict

  • Self-harm, suicidal ideation, or impulsive behaviours

  • Eating disorders or disordered eating patterns

  • Trauma and its ongoing impact

  • Anxiety, depression, or emotional burnout

  • Difficulty navigating independence, identity, or life transitions

You do not need a specific diagnosis to begin therapy. What matters most is how your experiences are affecting your life now.

How Adult Therapy Can Help

In our work together, we focus on building practical skills and understanding that support real change outside the therapy room:

  • Increasing emotional awareness and regulation

  • Learning how to tolerate distress without escalating harm

  • Strengthening communication and relational boundaries

  • Reducing behaviours that keep you stuck or unsafe

  • Clarifying values and building a life that feels more stable and meaningful

This is not quick-fix therapy. It is steady, skills-based work designed to support long-term change.

When Is Comprehensive DBT a Good Fit?

For some adults, a higher level of structure and support is clinically indicated. Comprehensive DBT includes individual therapy, skills training groups, phone coaching, and consultation-team support.

It is typically recommended for individuals experiencing chronic emotion dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal behaviours, eating disorders, or repeated crises. If you're unsure whether it's right for you, we can explore this together.
